Some say it's because of preference, but it's actually also an accessibility thing.This blog post itself doesn't have the code to enable dark and light themes for the user. Instead, it explains why having both of them is essential and provides further reading on the topic — yes, with links to some code and instructions as well.  Many people use everything they can in a dark theme. After all, staring at screens for a long time might be easier if the user interface uses darker colors. Using a dark theme instead of a light one also saves some battery. However, many people choose to use the dark theme because it is more accessible for them. For example, some vision issues might cause discomfort because of light or even wash out the rest of the person's vision. A white (or similar) background behind the text can cause these issues. Another reason is that dark themes often have better contrast (if they're designed properly). Now, if the dark theme is so great, why not just have the dark theme for the app and forget about the light theme? While dark theme is more accessible for many, some people benefit from light theme. For example, people with astigmatism may find light theme more accessible, and people with dyslexia might prefer light mode for readability. Let's discuss the technical considerations of light and dark themes next. Starting from Android 10 (SDK 29), there is a system setting for switching between dark and light modes. If you define your themes correctly, your app will respect that system-wide setting by default. To define a dark theme for your app using themes from XML files, follow the instructions in Android documentation: Implement dark theme. For apps using Jetpack Compose, the instructions are in Material Design 3 in Compose - Color scheme. A handy tool for generating themes is Material Theme Builder, a web tool for defining themes. You can use the web UI to define the colors and then export the theme and the color definitions to import to your project. It provides exports for both Compose and XML, as well as for Flutter, web, and Material Tokens. Why Your App Should Have Both Dark And Light Themes

While many entrepreneurs are currently facing the harsh reality of a VC funding crunch, Qonto isn’t one of them. The Paris-based business banking startup still has hundreds of millions of cash on hand. And it is using an undisclosed portion of its cash reserve to acquire Regate, an accounting and financial automation platform.Qonto originally started with online business accounts with debit cards specifically tailored for small and medium businesses. Over time, the company expanded its product offering to include invoicing tools, features to manage expenses and plenty of integrations with the fintech ecosystem to facilitate bookkeeping, payment reconciliation, etc.And that modern take on business banking has worked surprisingly well as more than 450,000 companies now have a Qonto account. While France remains Qonto’s main market, the company also acquired its German competitor Penta — and moved Penta’s customers to its own platform — and is also available in Italy and Spain.In 2022, near the peak of the funding frenzy of 2021 and 2022, the company raised a massive €486 million Series D funding round (that’s $529 million at today’s exchange rate). Now, Qonto wants to deliver on its original vision of building an all-in-one finance solution for small and medium businesses.As part of this vision, Qonto is acquiring Regate, a French startup we covered after it raised a €20 million Series A round ($22 million at today’s exchange rate). Regate is an accounting automation software-as-a-service startup.It integrates directly with existing accounting software platforms like Sage, Cegid and ACD so that Regate can focus on financial automation. Regate customers can easily track incoming payments, schedule payments to suppliers, sort through invoices and receipts, and even access their bank accounts from Regate’s interface.Since 2020, Regate managed to attract 10,000 clients — 6,000 of them are already Qonto customers. The company also sells its product to accounting firms directly with 500 firms using Regate.It’s a different go-to-market strategy and product philosophy compared to Pennylane, a newly minted French unicorn that wants to replace legacy accounting software entirely. Pennylane itself now also provides business bank accounts and moving into Qonto’s main product territory.“We have grown our revenue by 3x in 2023,” Regate co-founder Laura Pallier told TechCrunch. But when Qonto approached Regate, they decided to sell the company to reach the next level. “We had a rather intense discussion on the subject . . . We’re convinced that the cockpit approach — with a tool that works for both SMEs and their accountants — makes a lot more sense than multiple products.”With today’s acquisition, Regate’s team of 100 employees will all join Qonto’s current 1,400-people staff under a new business unit focused on financial tools for accountants. At first, there will be new integrations between both platforms.After a while, Regate will be integrated in Qonto directly to improve several accounting automation features of Qonto, such as invoicing, accounts payables, accounts receivables, etc. As for accounting firms, they’ll also act as a new sales channel for Qonto.“The idea is that these two platforms will gradually become one. But it’s going to be a gradual process, and we’ll always be very careful to maintain the customer experience for both corporate clients and accounting firms,” Pallier said.While Regate’s acquisition is only the second acquisition in Qonto’s history, it’s most likely not the last one. In part because its executives are happy with how Penta’s integration went, but also because of its current opportunity window.“We happen to have a planetary alignment. It would be a professional mistake not to look [at potential acquisitions]. We’re not the best at everything. So we should also stay humble and work with experts in their respective fields,” Qonto co-founder and president Steve Anavi told TechCrunch at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.“We have an in-house team that looks at opportunities. In the best-case scenario, we sign a deal. But even in the worst-case scenario, we can become partners because we’ve learned to know each other a little bit better over a very short process,” he added.Qonto finds itself in a different position from Payfit, another French unicorn (or former unicorn) that provides a software-as-a-service tool focused on payroll. Yesterday, Les Échos reported that Payfit plans to lay off 14% of the company, or 110 employees.Why are things looking better for Qonto? “We have a healthy business model. It means that when we acquire a customer, after a few months it’s a profitable customer. This is mainly because they pay — we don’t have any free offering. So, compared to a lot of fintech companies or startups in general that have a free offering and then try to upsell customers, we haven’t made that choice,” Qonto co-founder and CEO Alexandre Prot told TechCrunch.“The second element is that we raised a very large amount of money two years ago. And we were a bit lucky because the timing was right,” he added. Finally, rising interest rates have also created a new revenue stream for the company. And given Qonto’s scale, the company is handling very large sums of money on behalf of its customers.For these reasons, Qonto has plenty of cash to spend on acquisitions. As many fintech startups are struggling to raise a new funding round, Qonto could become a consolidator in the space. And we might be at the beginning of this consolidation phase.

Posted on Mar 7                      • Originally published at linuxtek.ca                   A few days ago, AWS announced in a blog post that they would be providing free DTO (Data Transfer Out) of AWS, when moving data to another cloud provider or to an on-premises data center. This is a pretty big deal, because one of the common concerns from companies looking to adopt the cloud, is the expense of moving their data out, causing vendor lock-in.In this article, we will explore details on transferring data in and out of AWS, some of the more recent regulatory changes, and the potential business impact.Typically, there is no charge for inbound data transfer to AWS.  The challenge becomes how to get the data into AWS quickly and efficiently.If a small amount of data needs to be transferred, it can be uploaded directly via the internet, for example to an S3 bucket.For larger datasets, or to set up a larger job to connect between an on-premises data center and AWS, the two most common options are Site-to-Site VPN and Direct Connect, both which come with a cost.  AWS DataSync can also be set up to copy between on-premises and AWS, to automate moving data to a number of AWS services.For extremely large datasets that cannot be transferred over the internet, or in an environment where there is no consistent network connectivity, the AWS Snow Family is available.  This allows for some edge computing to collect and process data, and move it to the AWS cloud by physically shipping the device to AWS.AWS Snowcone has an HDD and SSD device type, which can transfer 8-14TB of data securely on a device small enough to put in a backpack.AWS Snowball has a number of devices optimized for edge computing and data transfer.  The service allows you to order a ruggedized device that can hold multiple terrabytes to petabytes of data, to transfer to AWS. You would set up a Snowball Edge Job to define how to import the data into S3. Once the data is copied to the Snowball, it can be shipped back to the proper AWS datacenter to be uploaded and complete the job.If you have extremely large amounts of data to transfer, such as hundreds of petabytes or into exabytes, AWS Snowmobile can move up to 100PB at once via a ruggedized shipping container. The ruggedized shipping container is tamper-resistant, water-resistant, temperature controlled, and GPS-tracked.  The service was announced in 2016, and one of the trucks shown during a presentation that year at AWS re-Invent:https://youtu.be/8vQmTZTq7nw?si=v-XbG1xk9JeWdTYRFor all of the above methods, the charges would be for the method of data transfer, but the actual data transfer into AWS would cost $0.00/GB.Many of the methods for transferring data into AWS can also be used to transfer data out.  The catch is that until recently, you would also be charged per GB of data transferred out.  For example, see this AWS blog post from 2010, when outbound data transfer prices were reduced.  Companies would pay $0.08 - $0.15 per GB transferred out per month.  This would mean that for companies that have extremely large data sets in AWS, getting that data out would be prohibitively expensive, which could lead to some companies being locked into the platform.The example above is for data transfer from EC2 out to the internet, and is available on the pricing page.In 2021, AWS increased the free tier to make the first 100GB of data per month transferred out to the internet free.In January 2024, Google Cloud announced in a blog post that they would be eliminating data transfer fees when moving off Google Cloud. This would allow customers to use Google Cloud without having to worry about a gigantic cloud exit data transfer bill.  Customers do have to apply for free data transfer when exiting Google Cloud, but knowing the policy definitely could be reassuring.Since 2022, the European Union has been revising The European Data Act, and the final text was published in December 2023.  The European Data Act will become fully effective in September 2025.  The act specifies:The Data Act also improves the conditions under which businesses and consumers can use cloud and edge services in the EU. It becomes easier to move data and applications (from private photo archives to entire business administrations) from one provider to another without incurring any costs, because of new contractual obligations that the proposal presents for cloud providers, and a new standardisation framework for data and cloud interoperability.Part of the text includes a provision for a self-regulatory code of conduct for facilitating the switching of data processing services and the porting of data.  Many Cloud providers have signed on to the SWIPO (Switching Cloud Providers and Porting Data) group, including members of the Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers In Europe (CISPE).  In the most recent blog article from AWS, they refer to the waiver on data transfer following the direction set by the European Data Act, and being available to all AWS customers around the world, and from any AWS region.Interestingly, Microsoft has declared adherence to a SWIPO Code of Conduct, but the pricing details for Microsoft Azure still indicate the first 100GB of Internet Egress is free, but charged per GB after that.  I was not able to find an exception policy when exiting their cloud to another provider or moving back to on-premises.  It will be interesting to see if they follow suit with their competitors.It appears that the European Data Act is working to level the playing field among cloud providers, and making it less costly for companies to port their data out, removing one of the barriers that would cause "lock-in" with specific providers.
