Threat actors have been leveraging fake websites advertising popular video conferencing software such as Google Meet, Skype, and Zoom to deliver a variety of malware targeting both Android and Windows users since December 2023."The threat actor is distributing Remote Access Trojans (RATs) including SpyNote RAT for Android platforms, and NjRAT and DCRat for Windows systems," Zscaler ThreatLabz researchers said.The spoofed sites are in Russian and are hosted on domains that closely resemble their legitimate counterparts, indicating that the attackers are using typosquatting tricks to lure prospective victims into downloading the malware.They also come with options to download the app for Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. While clicking on the button for Android downloads an APK file, clicking on the Windows app button triggers the download of a batch script.The malicious batch script is responsible for executing a PowerShell script, which, in turn, downloads and executes the remote access trojan.Currently, there is no evidence that the threat actor is targeting iOS users, given that clicking on the button for the iOS app takes the user to the legitimate Apple App Store listing for Skype."A threat actor is using these lures to distribute RATs for Android and Windows, which can steal confidential information, log keystrokes, and steal files," the researchers said.The development comes as the AhnLab Security Intelligence Center (ASEC) revealed that a new malware dubbed WogRAT targeting both Windows and Linux is abusing a free online notepad platform called aNotepad as a covert vector for hosting and retrieving malicious code.It's said to be active from at least late 2022, targeting Asian countries like China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, among others. That said, it's currently not known how the malware is distributed in the wild."When WogRAT is run for the first time, it collects basic information of the infected system and sends them to the C&C server," ASEC said. "The malware then supports commands such as executing commands, sending results, downloading files, and uploading these files."It also coincides with high-volume phishing campaigns orchestrated by a financially motivated cybercriminal actor known as TA4903 to steal corporate credentials and likely follow them with business email compromise (BEC) attacks. The adversary has been active since at least 2019, with the activities intensifying post mid-2023."TA4903 routinely conducts campaigns spoofing various U.S. government entities to steal corporate credentials," Proofpoint said. It’s a pretty helpful tool whenever you want to avoid getting caught in a speed trap. Third, the developers are expanding hazard detection to include speed bumps, sharp turns, and toll booths. The speed limit warnings as well as the hazard detection upgrade are currently rolling out to all users. This next set of features is scheduled to launch down the line.Normally, whenever someone opens a navigation app, it’s because they want to get to their destination ASAP. Well, later this month, you’ll be given the option to take more scenic routes. They may not be the fastest way to get home, but at least, you’ll have the opportunity to take your favored path instead.Most drivers can agree that finding a place to park in a city can be an utter nightmare. To make finding the sweet spot less stressful, Waze is teaming up with software company Flash to provide information on parking garages. The app will tell you how much it costs to park at a location, whether it’s covered or open to the elements, if there’s a valet, and more. The announcement states the new data feed is seeing a limited release. It will provide info on a select group of 30,000 parking garages across major cities in the United States and Canada.The last feature will teach people how to navigate a roundabout. Waze states they’ll point out when to enter, when to switch lanes, and “where to exit”. Android users will receive the roundabout tool later this month, however, iPhone owners will have to wait until later in the year to get the same upgrade.We reached out to Google, which is Waze’s parent company, asking if there are plans for future expansions and if it’s going to add the same features to the app’s web page. Posted on Mar 7                      • Originally published at linuxtek.ca                   A few days ago, AWS announced in a blog post that they would be providing free DTO (Data Transfer Out) of AWS, when moving data to another cloud provider or to an on-premises data center. This is a pretty big deal, because one of the common concerns from companies looking to adopt the cloud, is the expense of moving their data out, causing vendor lock-in.In this article, we will explore details on transferring data in and out of AWS, some of the more recent regulatory changes, and the potential business impact.Typically, there is no charge for inbound data transfer to AWS.  The challenge becomes how to get the data into AWS quickly and efficiently.If a small amount of data needs to be transferred, it can be uploaded directly via the internet, for example to an S3 bucket.For larger datasets, or to set up a larger job to connect between an on-premises data center and AWS, the two most common options are Site-to-Site VPN and Direct Connect, both which come with a cost.  AWS DataSync can also be set up to copy between on-premises and AWS, to automate moving data to a number of AWS services.For extremely large datasets that cannot be transferred over the internet, or in an environment where there is no consistent network connectivity, the AWS Snow Family is available.  This allows for some edge computing to collect and process data, and move it to the AWS cloud by physically shipping the device to AWS.AWS Snowcone has an HDD and SSD device type, which can transfer 8-14TB of data securely on a device small enough to put in a backpack.AWS Snowball has a number of devices optimized for edge computing and data transfer.  The service allows you to order a ruggedized device that can hold multiple terrabytes to petabytes of data, to transfer to AWS. You would set up a Snowball Edge Job to define how to import the data into S3. Once the data is copied to the Snowball, it can be shipped back to the proper AWS datacenter to be uploaded and complete the job.If you have extremely large amounts of data to transfer, such as hundreds of petabytes or into exabytes, AWS Snowmobile can move up to 100PB at once via a ruggedized shipping container. The ruggedized shipping container is tamper-resistant, water-resistant, temperature controlled, and GPS-tracked.  The service was announced in 2016, and one of the trucks shown during a presentation that year at AWS re-Invent:https://youtu.be/8vQmTZTq7nw?si=v-XbG1xk9JeWdTYRFor all of the above methods, the charges would be for the method of data transfer, but the actual data transfer into AWS would cost $0.00/GB.Many of the methods for transferring data into AWS can also be used to transfer data out.  The catch is that until recently, you would also be charged per GB of data transferred out.  For example, see this AWS blog post from 2010, when outbound data transfer prices were reduced.  Companies would pay $0.08 - $0.15 per GB transferred out per month.  This would mean that for companies that have extremely large data sets in AWS, getting that data out would be prohibitively expensive, which could lead to some companies being locked into the platform.The example above is for data transfer from EC2 out to the internet, and is available on the pricing page.In 2021, AWS increased the free tier to make the first 100GB of data per month transferred out to the internet free.In January 2024, Google Cloud announced in a blog post that they would be eliminating data transfer fees when moving off Google Cloud. This would allow customers to use Google Cloud without having to worry about a gigantic cloud exit data transfer bill.  Customers do have to apply for free data transfer when exiting Google Cloud, but knowing the policy definitely could be reassuring.Since 2022, the European Union has been revising The European Data Act, and the final text was published in December 2023.  The European Data Act will become fully effective in September 2025.  The act specifies:The Data Act also improves the conditions under which businesses and consumers can use cloud and edge services in the EU. It becomes easier to move data and applications (from private photo archives to entire business administrations) from one provider to another without incurring any costs, because of new contractual obligations that the proposal presents for cloud providers, and a new standardisation framework for data and cloud interoperability.Part of the text includes a provision for a self-regulatory code of conduct for facilitating the switching of data processing services and the porting of data.  Many Cloud providers have signed on to the SWIPO (Switching Cloud Providers and Porting Data) group, including members of the Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers In Europe (CISPE).  In the most recent blog article from AWS, they refer to the waiver on data transfer following the direction set by the European Data Act, and being available to all AWS customers around the world, and from any AWS region.Interestingly, Microsoft has declared adherence to a SWIPO Code of Conduct, but the pricing details for Microsoft Azure still indicate the first 100GB of Internet Egress is free, but charged per GB after that.  I was not able to find an exception policy when exiting their cloud to another provider or moving back to on-premises.  It will be interesting to see if they follow suit with their competitors.It appears that the European Data Act is working to level the playing field among cloud providers, and making it less costly for companies to port their data out, removing one of the barriers that would cause "lock-in" with specific providers. The tech giants have been feuding for years over how payments are processed on iPhones and iPads.  Epic Games, maker of Fortnite, shown here, is in a battle with Apple over a possible competing app store for developers.Apple has prevented Fortnite maker Epic Games from releasing its game and app store in the European Union, escalating a years-long feud between the two tech giants. In a statement released on Wednesday, Epic published what it says was a letter from Apple, terminating its access to develop apps for iPhones and iPads."Please be advised that Apple has, effective immediately, terminated the Developer Program membership of Epic Games Sweden AB," Apple appeared to say in a March 2 letter from its lawyers posted by Epic. Apple described Epic's plans to release software for EU customers as "part of a global effort to undermine or evade Apple's rules." Apple didn't comment on whether the correspondence shared by Epic Games was authentic.Apple said its decision to terminate Epic's developer account applied worldwide. "Epic's egregious breach of its contractual obligations to Apple led courts to determine that Apple has the right to terminate 'any or all of Epic Games' wholly owned subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or other entities under Epic Games' control at any time and at Apple's sole discretion,'" the company said in a statement. "In light of Epic's past and ongoing behavior, Apple chose to exercise that right."Epic alleges Apple's moves are a violation of EU antitrust laws and said it intends to "fight to get back on iOS."The move comes as Apple is releasing a new version of its iOS software for iPhones, designed to follow rules called the Digital Markets Act. That law, which is designed to force Big Tech companies to allow more competition, requires Apple to allow customers in the EU to install alternative app stores and separately downloaded apps onto their devices.Apple's decision to terminate Epic's developer account marks another twist in a now-four-year-long, high-profile court battle between the two tech giants over how much power Apple exerts over its iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. Epic had argued that Apple should allow customers to download apps and pay developers however they wish. Since launching its App Store more than 15 years ago, Apple has required that apps for its iPhones be downloaded from there. Apple also set rules that most developers must charge customers through its payment-processing service, which collects up to a 30% fee on every charge. Epic is fighting a similar suit against Google over its handling of the Play Store.Apple broadly has won that argument in court, where judges have declared the iPhone maker hasn't violated antitrust laws by forcing app developers to use its in-app payment systems.Epic has vowed to continue fighting. On Wednesday, Epic said Apple's move to terminate its developer account undermined "our ability to be a viable competitor and they are showing other developers what happens when you try to compete with Apple or are critical of their unfair practices."
