Posted on Mar 6                  Ler em pt/brIn a Single Page Application (SPA), reactivity is the ability of the application to dynamically respond to changes in its data, updating parts of the page without the need to reload it from scratch.When Vue detects changes in its states, it utilizes the virtual DOM to re-render the interface and ensure that it is always up-to-date, making the process as fast and efficient as possible.There are different ways to declare reactive states in a Vue application, which may vary depending on the API in use (Options or Composition), as well as the data types themselves. This method returns an object with all reactive states and their values.In the example above, counter is a reactive data, and if modified, the interface will automatically update to reflect the changes.To see reactivity in action, let's create a method (or function) that modifies the value of counter each time we click a button.Note that, upon clicking the button, the value of counter is automatically updated in the interface.It's important for all reactive data to be used in the component to be declared in the data option, even if they don't have a defined value yet, as they will be instantiated in the component as soon as it is created (allowing the use of this in methods and lifecycle hooks).If you need to initialize a state without a defined value, you can use undefined, null, or any other value that serves as a placeholder (such as an empty string, for example).Computed properties are used when we need to perform calculations or other logic based on data properties in a passive manner. In other words, when a reactive data is changed, all computed properties that depend on that data are also updated. It's as if they were formatting functions for variables.To declare computed properties, we use the function syntax within the computed option. This function should always return a value.Note that we did not use the arrow function syntax in our computed property because they do not have this in their context, preventing us from accessing our data properties.The computed property above always returns twice the value of counter. We can see in our application that whenever counter is modified, the value of doubleCounter is automatically updated:The same result could be achieved directly in the template of our component by inserting the logic within the interpolation ({{ }}, also called "mustache").This way, our application would behave the same. However, in larger applications, these logics can become much more complex, and with the use of computed properties, we can make our template more understandable and our code more organized.It's easy to see that the same logic of doubleCounter could be achieved through a method instead of a computed property, right?With the code above, we could easily achieve the same result. And why didn't we choose this alternative? Because computed properties are cached based on the reactive data they depend on.What does that mean?It means that, as long as counter is not modified, doubleCounter will not change either and will always return the last computed result, regardless of how many times you re-render your component. On the other hand, methods will always be executed when the component is re-rendered, even if our reactive data counter does not change.Why do we need caching? Imagine we have an expensive computed property list, which requires looping through a huge array and doing a lot of computations. Then we may have other computed properties that in turn depend on list. Without caching, we would be executing list’s getter many more times than necessary! — Extract from Vue docs.So, let's use methods only when we don't need caching! 😉In Vue 3, reactivity is achieved through the system known as "Proxy-based Reactivity," which creates proxies around data objects, allowing the interception of read (get) and write (set) operations on the properties of these objects. This system is an evolution of the reactivity system used in previous Vue versions (which used Object.defineProperty), providing more efficient performance with fewer limitations.As a result, with the Composition API we have different ways to declare reactive states. Here the data properties come out and the ref() and reactive() functions come into play!To declare reactive data using the ref() function, we should use the variable declaration syntax with const. ref() is commonly used for states with primitive types (such as string, number, boolean, etc.). Let's use the same example of counter:When we studied the differences between Options and Composition API, we saw that we need to import the native Vue functions we are going to use in our component. So, we start by importing ref and using it in our counter variable to encapsulate the initial value of our state.To change the value of counter, we create an arrow function that modifies the .value property of our ref. This property is automatically created by the Vue 3 reactivity system, and it is not necessary to declare it when creating our state with ref(). This property allows Vue to detect whether a state has been accessed or modified.Note that when we use our computed state directly in the template, there is no need to use the .value property.reactive() is the second way Vue provides for declaring reactive data. Unlike ref, which encapsulates the value of the data in an internal object with the .value property, the reactive() function makes object-type data reactive. Therefore, reactive() has the limitation of not accepting strings, numbers, and booleans.Using our counter example, we can refactor our code to use reactive():In the code above, our variable state now receives an object { counter: 0 } as reactive data. In this case, if we want to change the value of counter, we can directly access the counter key within the state object in our increaseCounter method.Note that in our template, we also need to access state.counter directly so that its value is correctly rendered on the screen.As mentioned earlier, the first limitation of the reactive() function is not accepting string, number, and boolean. Therefore, this function should only be used for object-type data (such as objects themselves, arrays, and collections like Map and Set).It's also not possible to reassign a new value to the same reactive object. In other words, you cannot replace the entire object with another object because the Vue reactivity system works directly with property access.The use of reactive() also does not allow for destructuring because the reactivity connection reference is lost:The use of computed properties serves the same purpose as seen earlier: performing calculations and logic passively according to the detected change in a ref() or reactive().However, with the Composition API, we have a different syntax for creating these computed properties: computed() is now a function that takes another function as a parameter and returns a computed ref. In an open letter published on Wednesday, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy outlined the livestreaming company’s plans for 2024, with a focus on helping streamers grow their audiences even when they aren’t live.This year, Twitch plans to overhaul its app for the first time in five years, ditching its longstanding design to focus on a scrollable feed that takes after TikTok and lets viewers hop between bite-sized bits of content to discover new streamers. The company hasn’t named a date for the launch of the redesigned app, but the move shows that Twitch is prioritizing changes to make both its business and its streamer community more sustainable for the long haul.“People can’t be live all the time, right? So we want to give tools to creators, to help them continue to engage their community while they’re offline,” Twitch VP of Community Product, Jeremy Forrester told TechCrunch in an interview.Twitch has had a rocky year. Emmett Shear, one of the original founders of Justin.tv, the variety livestreaming service that would grow into Twitch, stepped down from his role as the company’s CEO a year ago. In the time since, Twitch has undergone rounds of deep layoffs, cutting 500 employees — another 35% of its workforce — last month. Late last year the company announced that it would pull out of South Korea, a major esports market, citing the “prohibitively expensive” cost of running an online business there. In 2023, Twitch also wrestled with community-wide controversies following updates to its revenue split and branded content rules, which in both instances the company walked back after a backlash from streamers.Given the layoffs and broader uncertainty about its business, 2024 is a make or break year for Twitch. The company needs to tighten things up while reassuring the streamers that make the platform tick that Twitch is the right place to invest their time and energy.Livestreaming has long been Twitch’s bread and butter, but in the past year the platform has been more open to ways of packaging its content that don’t require streamers and viewers to be online at the same time.A year ago, Twitch released a tool that helped streamers easily export video clips to apps like YouTube and TikTok, with plans to export directly to Instagram on the way soon. Those additions show that Twitch knows that it needs a symbiotic rather than purely competitive relationship with other social networks to boost discoverability and make it easier for creators just getting started to build an audience.“We want to drastically increase the amount of content that’s exported from Twitch into other social networks,” Forrester said. “So the goal really is like, a lot more people seeing more Twitch content every time they’re in Instagram, every time they’re in TikTok, every time they’re in YouTube Shorts.“… Live content is very different from offline content, and offline content has a somewhat easier ability to go viral. In general it’s easier to get massive boosts on offline content than it is on live. And that’s one of the benefits of getting more content onto other services… you have an opportunity to be exposed to more people and more opportunities to get seen by many people and bring them back to your community.”Twitch’s new clip editor makes sharing vertical video on YouTube and TikTok a snapStream Together, the co-streaming product previously known as Guest Star, is another gesture toward improving discovery. Twitch says that it plans to bring improvements to Stream Together to streamline the setup process and build a way for streamers to “spontaneously” discover other streamers to collaborate with on the platform, rather than counting on them having an existing community of peers to tap. That might be a risky proposition (a lot can go wrong when you’re live) but it shows that Twitch knows it needs all of the force multipliers it can get to drive viewers to channels beyond its well-followed superstars.Twitch also introduced its own version of a Snapchat or Instagram-like Stories into the app last year. The feature sits at the top of the current design and highlights ephemeral posts from channels its users follow. Twitch’s Stories will soon add some basic quality of life improvements, like letting streamers create and upload original short videos, adding pinch-to-zoom for photos and making it possible to share vertical stream clips.“The purpose is how do we allow creators to engage with their community when they’re not live,” Forrester said. “How do we allow creators to take a break, but still be able to connect with their fans and their watchers and hopefully bring them back to future live streams.”Because of its long viewing sessions and the fact that streamers rely on beefy PCs (and, perhaps even more essentially, ambient RGB lighting), Twitch historically has focused more on its desktop experience than its mobile app. But the company wants to make those experiences more equal, including for the moderators who keep many of its popular communities humming along. In the open letter, Clancy acknowledged that the lack of mobile tools for mods was “a real limitation” for keeping communities safe and that the company will introduce a mobile mod view for iOS so mods can do their thing on the go.Twitch’s new Guest Star mode will let anyone turn their stream into a talk showMost social media platforms focus on punchy, seconds-long videos or short, grabby lines of text, but Twitch has always been a different beast. Content on Twitch is extremely long form, with streamers regularly broadcasting gameplay or just chatting for many hours per session. Viewers who follow streamers on Twitch are glued to these lengthy sessions, but the long form approach does have some inherent challenges, which the company is grappling with in 2024.For one, all of that livestreaming infrastructure for many hour long sessions is very expensive, even under Amazon’s wing. And given the depth of recent layoffs, Twitch’s parent company doesn’t seem willing to let its livestreaming business lose money forever.
