While many entrepreneurs are currently facing the harsh reality of a VC funding crunch, Qonto isn’t one of them. The Paris-based business banking startup still has hundreds of millions of cash on hand. And it is using an undisclosed portion of its cash reserve to acquire Regate, an accounting and financial automation platform.Qonto originally started with online business accounts with debit cards specifically tailored for small and medium businesses. Over time, the company expanded its product offering to include invoicing tools, features to manage expenses and plenty of integrations with the fintech ecosystem to facilitate bookkeeping, payment reconciliation, etc.And that modern take on business banking has worked surprisingly well as more than 450,000 companies now have a Qonto account. While France remains Qonto’s main market, the company also acquired its German competitor Penta — and moved Penta’s customers to its own platform — and is also available in Italy and Spain.In 2022, near the peak of the funding frenzy of 2021 and 2022, the company raised a massive €486 million Series D funding round (that’s $529 million at today’s exchange rate). Now, Qonto wants to deliver on its original vision of building an all-in-one finance solution for small and medium businesses.As part of this vision, Qonto is acquiring Regate, a French startup we covered after it raised a €20 million Series A round ($22 million at today’s exchange rate). Regate is an accounting automation software-as-a-service startup.It integrates directly with existing accounting software platforms like Sage, Cegid and ACD so that Regate can focus on financial automation. Regate customers can easily track incoming payments, schedule payments to suppliers, sort through invoices and receipts, and even access their bank accounts from Regate’s interface.Since 2020, Regate managed to attract 10,000 clients — 6,000 of them are already Qonto customers. The company also sells its product to accounting firms directly with 500 firms using Regate.It’s a different go-to-market strategy and product philosophy compared to Pennylane, a newly minted French unicorn that wants to replace legacy accounting software entirely. Pennylane itself now also provides business bank accounts and moving into Qonto’s main product territory.“We have grown our revenue by 3x in 2023,” Regate co-founder Laura Pallier told TechCrunch. But when Qonto approached Regate, they decided to sell the company to reach the next level. “We had a rather intense discussion on the subject . . . We’re convinced that the cockpit approach — with a tool that works for both SMEs and their accountants — makes a lot more sense than multiple products.”With today’s acquisition, Regate’s team of 100 employees will all join Qonto’s current 1,400-people staff under a new business unit focused on financial tools for accountants. At first, there will be new integrations between both platforms.After a while, Regate will be integrated in Qonto directly to improve several accounting automation features of Qonto, such as invoicing, accounts payables, accounts receivables, etc. As for accounting firms, they’ll also act as a new sales channel for Qonto.“The idea is that these two platforms will gradually become one. But it’s going to be a gradual process, and we’ll always be very careful to maintain the customer experience for both corporate clients and accounting firms,” Pallier said.While Regate’s acquisition is only the second acquisition in Qonto’s history, it’s most likely not the last one. In part because its executives are happy with how Penta’s integration went, but also because of its current opportunity window.“We happen to have a planetary alignment. It would be a professional mistake not to look [at potential acquisitions]. We’re not the best at everything. So we should also stay humble and work with experts in their respective fields,” Qonto co-founder and president Steve Anavi told TechCrunch at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.“We have an in-house team that looks at opportunities. In the best-case scenario, we sign a deal. But even in the worst-case scenario, we can become partners because we’ve learned to know each other a little bit better over a very short process,” he added.Qonto finds itself in a different position from Payfit, another French unicorn (or former unicorn) that provides a software-as-a-service tool focused on payroll. Yesterday, Les Échos reported that Payfit plans to lay off 14% of the company, or 110 employees.Why are things looking better for Qonto? “We have a healthy business model. It means that when we acquire a customer, after a few months it’s a profitable customer. This is mainly because they pay — we don’t have any free offering. So, compared to a lot of fintech companies or startups in general that have a free offering and then try to upsell customers, we haven’t made that choice,” Qonto co-founder and CEO Alexandre Prot told TechCrunch.“The second element is that we raised a very large amount of money two years ago. And we were a bit lucky because the timing was right,” he added. Finally, rising interest rates have also created a new revenue stream for the company. And given Qonto’s scale, the company is handling very large sums of money on behalf of its customers.For these reasons, Qonto has plenty of cash to spend on acquisitions. As many fintech startups are struggling to raise a new funding round, Qonto could become a consolidator in the space. And we might be at the beginning of this consolidation phase.

People from across the industry showed up ready to talk business, and we had a lot of lively and challenging discussions about advertising and business models. Did we solve all of the podcasting’s troubles? Hardly, but I know I am feeling more optimistic about the future of the industry. Below, I have some key takeaways from the events of the day.I also made my first appearance at On Air Fest interviewing Freakonomics Radio host Stephen Dubner. It was a lot of fun to talk craft (plus business, obviously) and get his perspective on the state of the industry today. We discussed This American Life’s early embrace of online distribution, how he took the company private after co-owning it with WBEZ for two decades, and what he thinks it takes for a podcast to succeed right now. Although This American Life has weathered the industry turbulence better than other audio outlets, it’s not immune. He said that the show was impacted by the advertising downturn experienced by everyone else and that, like so many other podcasts, This American Life’s downloads dropped by 20 percent after the iOS 17 update cut down on automatic downloads.“I’m not crazy about losing money. If those are our numbers, those are our numbers. But it’s sad. It’s emotional. The numbers are emotional,” Glass said. “A year ago, if I called somebody, I could have said ‘here’s the deal, here’s who we are: 4.5 million people hear us each week.’ And now I have to say 3.5 million, which still sounds like a lot. But it is a pain in my heart every time I say it.”Glass also gave the audience a peek into his own listening habits. In his library: Search Engine, Hacks on Tap, Shameless Acquisition Target, and one of my favorites, Unholy: Two Jews on the News. He claims he has never met another person who listens to Unholy, but we are out here! You can see the full list on Spotify (kindly compiled by Descript’s Arielle Nissenblatt). It has been a rough year for podcast advertising, and I was lucky enough to be joined by Kelli Hurley, global head of revenue partnerships at SiriusXM, and Tomas Rodriguez, senior director of audio partnerships at The Trade Desk, to discuss what went wrong and how to move forward. It was a long conversation (an hour!) and included lots of incisive questions from the audience. Now that money is no longer flowing fast and furious into podcasting, the main problem, everyone agreed, is finding a way to support mid-tier podcasts. It’s the key to sustainable growth in the industry (there can only be so many Joe Rogans or Conan O’Briens), and much easier said than done.Representing the sell side, Hurley talked about the matchmaking that happens between brands and shows. She advised that creators have advertising plans in mind as they develop their shows. Even so, it’s a high bar to get that kind of direct ad spend.  “I would say we’d like to see 100,000 [downloads] at minimum per episode. That’s ideal,” she said. “Now, certainly, we have shows that are smaller than that. I think if you have a niche audience that is more diverse… that’s where I think those smaller audiences hold incredible value.”On the buy side, Rodriguez pitched programmatic. Programmatic gets a bad rap in podcasting (there have been horror stories about ads not firing off and ads completely mismatched with podcasts), but he argues that it is a way to entice larger companies to put their money into the podcasting space. It also takes the pressure off individual shows to hit certain download metrics, since a brand buying programmatically will have their ads featured on a bunch of different shows. So as long as they get their return on investment, it doesn’t matter if an individual show experiences a listening downturn (like what happened with iOS 17). The CPMs podcasts can charge through programmatic are lower, but they also spend less in time and labor costs scripting and producing host-read ads.“When I think about how podcasts kind of take that next level, like, I want us to get a little bit bigger,” Rodriguez said. “I want us to make it easier for brands to come into the door and scale against podcasting. I think that’s the role programmatic has.”Following the layoffs that have hit every part of the industry, from corporate giants like Spotify to public radio outlets like NPR and WNYC to indie darlings like Pushkin Industries, podcasters are becoming increasingly skeptical of traditional models. I was joined by Jasper Wang, Defector Media’s VP of revenue and operations, Eric Silver, creative lead at Multitude Productions, and Yooree Losordo, Radiotopia’s director of network operations. Each was able to speak to a different kind of nontraditional structure, with Wang discussing Defector as a worker-owned cooperative, Silver talking about forming a collective, and Losordo explaining how a network of independents functions.Defector, which was built by the former staff of Deadspin, has been seen as a success story and representative of how cooperatives can work in media, in no small part because Normal Gossip has become a massive hit. But it is not as utopian as it may appear from the outside. Wang said that if your co-op limits outside investment (which Defector does), then there is no safety net if your product doesn’t work. “Ultimately, it’s sort of like, how much shit are you willing to eat up until the point at which your dream comes true? The answer might be ‘not that much shit’ or ‘the dream is never gonna come true.’”Radiotopia, which is part of PRX and operates as a network for independent creators, gives podcasters the opportunity to connect with advertisers without relinquishing rights to their shows. “They don’t have to give up IP. Everybody remains in control of their feeds, and their fates,” said Losordo. “When we do sponsorships and sales, we work with an outside agency, they take a cut, and then PRX takes a cut of the net. But the lion’s share still goes to the shows.”A collective like Multitude splits the difference. Silver said that in addition to helping independent creators sell ads on their shows, Multitude offers consulting and encourages developing multiple streams of income through live shows and subscriptions. But it also expects the creators in the collective to reinforce each other by touring together and featuring fellow Multitude shows in their midrolls. “It’s like a network without top down power,” Silver said.We had a lot of interest from the audience in how these work, so feel free to send additional questions my way! With 15,000 team members, 3,000 providers and $3.1 billion in annual operating revenue, Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest public health systems in the U.S. A South Florida-based academic medical center, Memorial operates six hospitals, including the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; numerous primary, urgent and 24/7 care facilities; a health specialty center; and a nursing home.THE PROBLEMMemorial began offering on-demand virtual urgent care to its employees and patients via a third-party vendor in 2016. With the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Memorial launched telehealth for all its primary care and specialty centers, and today conducts about 100,000 virtual visits per year.Previously, Memorial’s providers observed that relying on a third-party vendor solely for on-demand urgent care resulted in an inconsistent patient experience and raised concerns about quality due to limited data sharing.For example, the third-party virtual providers did not have full access to patients’ medical records, creating a disconnected patient experience and annoyances for patients who must submit their medical histories and medication lists as if they were obtaining care at an entirely separate health system. In addition, all data from these visits was lost to Memorial and its provider team as it didn’t flow back to Memorial.“With our previous virtual vendor, we could brand the service as our own to patients, but virtual providers were unable to ‘know’ patients because they lacked access to patients’ full medical records,” said Bill Manzie, administrative director of telehealth at Memorial Healthcare System.“The result was patients had to enter their medical history or medication lists and wonder why the doctor didn’t know it already, leading to patient frustration and feelings of disconnection.”PROPOSALIn January 2023, Memorial began working with KeyCare, an Epic-based virtual care company (Memorial uses Epic for its EHR).“With KeyCare, Memorial could offer its patients a seamless virtual care experience, patients and staff could be reassured patient data was shared between KeyCare and Memorial providers, and Memorial could save money by taking advantage of Epic’s built-in interoperability features that minimized technical needs from their staff,” Manzie explained.“KeyCare offers health systems access to a nationwide network of virtual care providers working on its optimized Epic instance, which then connects easily to other Epic-based health systems,” he added.Ultimately, the challenge Memorial faced was to widen its digital front door and expand its capacity with a virtual workforce vendor in a manner that provided a seamless experience for patients, maintained the health system brand and relationship with the patient, ensured robust data interoperability between the health system and its partner, could be implemented quickly with minimal IT lift, and could create a positive ROI, he said.MEETING THE CHALLENGEMemorial was an early adopter of Keycare and became the first site to go live with pediatrics. The project, which included weekly meetings, and sessions focused on billing, reporting and marketing, kicked off November 15, 2022.Notably, the service was successfully launched just two months later, beginning on January 17, 2023. Today both adult and pediatric patients nationwide have access to KeyCare providers offering on-demand virtual urgent care 24/7 via MemorialDOCNow, Memorial’s online portal.“Additionally, KeyCare providers have access to each Memorial patient’s data as they provide care and complete their notes on KeyCare’s Epic instance,” Manzie noted. “Upon completion of the visit, the encounter information is automatically sent to Memorial via Epic’s Care Everywhere and Telehealth Anywhere functionality.“Additionally, an in-basket message can be sent to the primary care provider, or any Epic pool designated by the health system,” he continued. “The Memorial providers and patients thus have a truly coordinated experience, as all encounter details can be viewed natively in their Memorial instance of Epic, and Memorial providers can review and reconcile any new allergies, medications or problems placed by KeyCare.”Today, the scope of the work between Memorial and KeyCare includes:On-demand, 24/7 urgent careNational coverage for consumers and employeesEnsuring new and existing users stay connected to Memorial’s digital front door instead of going to an external third party for careBuilt-in interoperability between KeyCare’s Epic instance and Memorial’s Epic instanceConsultation from KeyCare executive and marketing teams for the program’s designRESULTSBy working with KeyCare, Memorial has been able to augment its care team, optimize capacity and widen its digital front door, Manzie said.“After going live with KeyCare, virtual visit volume grew quickly, with more than 4,000 visits completed in the first ten months after the program launched,” he reported. “Via MemorialDOCNow, KeyCare providers have conducted visits with patients across more than 30 different states.”In addition, he noted:Average wait times are approximately 10 minutesDecreased low-acuity visits going to valuable office or emergency room slots, as 54% of these patients indicated they otherwise would have gone to urgent care, 18% to primary care, and 9% to the emergency room if this virtual service were not available. This additionally decreases chance of leakage to outside health systemsPatients rated the experience very highly, with a net promoter score (NPS) of 87, and 91% of patients identifying as promotersADVICE FOR OTHERSIn the rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare, working this closely with a vendor has set a benchmark for integrating technology to enhance patient care and provider coordination, Manzie said.“As we navigate this journey, there are several lessons and pieces of advice we can offer to other healthcare provider organizations considering a similar path,” he said. “Ensure the technology integrates seamlessly with your existing systems. Using an advanced platform, combined with functionalities like Care Everywhere and Telehealth Anywhere, allows for real-time access to patient data. This seamless integration is crucial for maintaining comprehensive and continuous care, minimizing disruptions to existing workflows.“Prioritize solutions that offer robust data sharing capabilities,” he continued. “The ability to access a patient’s data and share encounter information automatically ensures every care touchpoint is informed and up to date. Memorial Healthcare finds success with switch to Epic-based telehealth vendor

March 7 marks the day that six major tech companies — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft — must provide compliance reports for the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which has been in effect since May 2023. Here is how these so-called “gatekeeper” companies have complied so far and who else the DMA may apply to.The big change effective March 7: App developers can expect to see new fees on the Google Play Store if they want to direct users to sites or apps outside Google’s ecosystem.The purpose of the DMA is to ensure digital markets are “fair and open,” promoting competition and innovation and keeping companies from encouraging users to explore only within that one company’s ecosystem of apps and products.In September 2023, the European Commission labeled Alphabet (parent company of Google), Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft “gatekeepers,” or providers of certain “core platform services” like Google Maps, Apple AppStore and Amazon Marketplace. There are 22 core platform services. Booking, ByteDance and X notified the European Commission on March 1 that they are potential candidates for gatekeeper status.ByteDance is mentioned twice because, in November 2023, the company appealed its gatekeeper status. The company argued that its main product, TikTok, isn’t well established enough to count. As of March 2024, it’s back to being a “potential” gatekeeper.SEE: The EU’s regulations may have impacts across the world, including in Australia. (TechRepublic)By March 7, designated gatekeeper organizations must submit compliance reports to the EU, outlining how they plan to follow the Act. Next, each organization will work with the Commission individually to refine those plans.If organizations don’t file by the deadline or don’t make changes to come into compliance with the DMA, they can face fines. The Commission could fine noncompliant organizations up to 10% of the organization’s total worldwide turnover. Repeated infringement could increase that number to 20%. In the most severe cases, the Commission could oblige a gatekeeper to sell all or parts of their business, or ban them from acquiring certain services.The DMA applies to organizations that have a major economic impact in the EU (at least €7.5 billion of revenue in the EU per year for the last three fiscal years) and have more than 45 million monthly active end users in the EU, or more than 10,000 yearly active business users for at least three fiscal years.In January 2024, Apple announced changes to the App Store in response to the DMA that included fees for app developers and a €0.50 per first install Core Technology Fee for applications with more than one million installs every year. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney called this “malicious compliance” in January.Other services that use the App Store have been unhappy with Apple’s response as well. On March 1, a group of companies including Spotify addressed the European Commission, saying Apple’s attempt at DMA compliance “seems designed to maintain and even amplify Apple’s exploitation of its dominance over app developers.”The DMA fined Apple $1.95 billion on March 4 specifically because of the protest started by Spotify regarding how Apple promotes its own music service, the AP reported. Apple plans to appeal the fine.Some significant changes to Google products and services were announced on March 5.
